Small onion chutney, vengaya chutney recipe
Onion chutney recipe – Onion chutney is a famous chutney of South India. This onion chutney is made with small onions which is nothing but sambar onions or shallots. You can make the same chutney using the regular onions too. Red onions also taste very good for this chutney.
I’ve been trying to post this onion chutney for the past one year and it never happened. Either the pictures would not turn out well or I would have lost the pictures of this onion chutney. I am happy that I am finally posting it now.
Onion chutney is very easy to make. Gj just loves to have this onion chutney with dosa or idli. I make this chutney once in a while especially when I have abundant onions in my pantry.
Onion chutney goes well with upma, dosa, idli and even with other tiffin items. So, make hot Idli and try it out with this spicy and tasty small onion chutney.

How to make small onion chutney or chinna vengayam chutney:
1. Heat two teaspoon of oil, and add small onions. Fry until onions turn golden brown and then add red chillies and tamarind paste. Fry for three more minutes and set aside. Let it cool down completely.2.Transfer to a blender. Add required salt and grind to a fine paste.3.Heat oil in a pan, let the mustard seeds splutter. Then add urad dal and curry leaves.Now, small onion chutney recipe is ready! Serve with idli and dosa.
- Increase or decrease the red chillies according to your taste.
- If you don’t have small onions, use 1 cup of chopped big onions.
- You can use gingelly oil instead of normal cooking oil.
